I think literacy is used in forms of language and
writing and can be determined many different ways. I don’t think it’s just
reading and writing but the student’s comprehension. The dictionary states
literacy as “the ability to read and write to a competent level” or “skill in a
particular subject”. However, today, I believe the term computer literacy is used
more than anything else. It’s the ability to use technology. That is our world –
technology. I found a post called Computer Literacy in Schools which discuss
how important it is for kids to learn about technology early in life. This is
one of the many reasons I wanted to continue my education and obtain my Masters
in Educational Technology. I want to be able to provide my students with the
skills and knowledge they need for their future.
Michelle, I think having our Master's in this program is wonderful for the future of our students. I feel so much more knowledgable on ways to incorporate technology into our classroom and tie it in the curriculum than I could before. Technology is our world today so we must embrace it!
ReplyDeleteJennifer, Yes I completely agree. I always thought I was pretty good at technology until I started taking some classes...then I realized I wasn't where I should be. I even had to ask my son about some things when I first started. There are so many resources that we can use now!
DeleteI agree that there are multiple literacies with reading/writing text being just one. The video in Unit 1 talked about redefining literacy. I think it has been redefined to include a technological aspect. Children are exposed to technology at a much earlier age than most of us were. My 2 year old nephew is able to navigate a tablet with little assistance and "shows" his grandparents how to get to his favorite apps. :) Technology doesn't just keep students engaged in lessons, it can present, show, and demonstrate concepts or information that might otherwise be abstract to them. I agree with you that technology plays an essential role in our life and world and must also be included in educational settings.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. The students of today are born knowing how to use technology...not really because I had kindergarten today and it was very difficult trying to get kiddos on the computer :) However, you are correct, they are exposed to so much. It's funny how the little ones can always show the adults how to use technology.
